2022 Martin Woods Hyland Vineyard Pinot Noir from the McMinnville AVA is a lifted, old-vine expression of Willamette Pinot, built around delicate red fruits, forest floor, and mulling-spice aromatics with a cool, stony undertone. The palate is lithe and precise, marrying fresh acidity to silken, fine tannins, and finishing long with that windswept, mineral elegance Hyland gets from its volcanic Coast Range basalt soils and Van Duzer Gap cooling influence.
This is the kind of Pinot that can be gorgeous young with air, but it’s also structured for the cellar. Expect it to really hit its stride after a few years and keep getting more savory and complex over the next decade-plus. Pair it with duck (especially with cherry or cranberry), pork loin with porcini or chanterelles, herb-roasted chicken, or earthy plates like mushroom risotto, lentils, and aged alpine-style cheeses.
